Interview Dos & Don'ts
The purpose of an interview is to exchange information between you and your interviewer. You want to convince the interviewer that you are one of the best-qualified people for the job. What you do and say during the interview is very important. Some good advice to remember:
- First impressions are important. Arrive on time. Do not arrive too early.
- Dress appropriately. Make sure your clothes are clean and neat. A good rule to remember is that you want the interviewer to focus on YOU, not your clothing.
- Bring a copy of your resume, just in case the interviewer did not receive it.
- Act natural. Be yourself. Do not try to “role play” or present yourself as anything other than who you are.
- Attitude is Important. Be pleasant and easy to talk to. Don’t be afraid to tell an interviewer about yourself. Be enthusiastic without being loud. Keep your voice modulated and focus on talking slowly and clearly.
- Be alert, friendly and courteous, but NOT casual.
- Know how to respond to interview questions. Generally a “yes” or “no” answer to a question is not adequate. Use questions as opportunities to present some additional information about your qualifications.
- Be completely honest. Do not misrepresent information. Deal with potential problems in a straightforward manner. If you are unable to answer a question, say so. Don’t try to bluff.
- Always keep your primary objective in mind. Your goal is to get a job. If you believe you are qualified for the job and can handle it, say so.
- At the end of the interview, thank your interviewer using his/her name and shake hands.
